In the series Heen- en Weerwolf an artist is invited to travel back in time. The 'Weerwolf' is an artist who travels between past and present and delves into a small piece of history out of personal interest.
In this second edition of Heen- en Weerwolf, visual artist Raul Balai reverses history.
'kuku, kaka, cucu' is a speculative retelling of how his adoptive brothers travel back to El Salvador, his stepmother returns by boat to the Maluku islands, and Balai arrives at a garden in Suriname, where Balai's parents would once build a house, but which they did not return to after the December murders. All these journeys lead to a family history in which world politics shines through. And in which, as in many migration stories, the question 'what if' rises. 'What if' is disruptive, it leaves you longing for a future that probably never would have existed. But 'what if' also ensures the continuous imagining of an alternative course of things, and ensures that what is lost becomes tangible. The publication consists of three separate parts that are connected to each other, but always remain independent.
